The third part of the RWB’s “Going Home Star” Journey series is about sharing how the organization has benefited from the wisdom of elder friends and the connection with the Indigenous community – plus what the future holds!  

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and School actively consults with Indigenous artists and arts organizations about new opportunities to collaborate on dance education and training initiatives. School students and faculty have joined the Company and staff to learn more about the history and legacy of the residential schools and cultural practices and customs. We also affirm our commitment as an organization that values diversity and inclusion, to strongly encourage Indigenous peoples to consider the RWB as an employer of choice…

The RWB is dedicated to commissioning Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists to undertake collaborative projects to produce and present works that contribute to the reconciliation process. We look forward to making a special announcement in May…

As the Royal Winnipeg Ballet liaises with the Indigenous Advisory Circle and elders in the community, we continue to promote Indigenous programming. As such, from March 25-27 2002, the RWB presented Fast Forward, an extraordinary performance that featured classical and contemporary pieces, as well as choreography of both resident and guest artists.  One of the pieces was choreographed by Cameron Fraser-Monroe, a member of the Tla’amin First Nation in Powell River, BC, and of Ukrainian and Scottish descent, who is also an alumnus of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. His work ʔaǰɛmət, formerly Pine Needle, interprets an excerpt of the Indigenous story “Why the Raven’s Feathers are Black” through contemporary movement influenced by grass dance and hoop dance. It was simply stunning and very well received!
